Jakarta Govt Pressed to Tackle Looming Water Shortages

The Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) calls on the city government to take proactive measures against an extended drought, warning of potential clean water scarcity in the capital.

It demands a serious response.

Jakarta DPRD Chairman, Suhud Alynudin urged officials not to take the drought lightly, pointing out that Jakarta's disaster management agency (BPBD) had previously issued its highest alert level.

“It demands a serious response. With BPBD issuing a top alert and this long drought being inevitable, we have to stay ahead of it,” he expressed, Thursday (9/17).

He suggested expanding the use of desalination technology to convert seawater into drinkable water, serving as a strategic alternative amid dwindling raw water supplies.

“Desalination is already being used in Seribu Islands to turn seawater into clean, fresh water. I believe we should start exploring this option for mainland Jakarta to prepare for potential water shortages,” he explained.

Notably, BPBD clarified that the top-tier drought warning—triggered by BMKG’s tracking of rainless streaks—does not mean the entire capital is out of water just yet.

To stay ahead of the dry spell, BPBD is keeping a close eye on vulnerable zones and teaming up with key agencies. Their action plan includes prepping response teams, running Weather Modification Operations (OMC) to refill reservoirs and clear toxic air, and dispatching clean water supplies with PAM Jaya through the Jakarta Siaga 112 hotline.
